Delozier Initiative to Aid Veterans Has Taken Effect
January 13, 2025
HARRISBURG—On Dec. 30, 2024, an initiative put forward by Rep. Sheryl M. Delozier (R-Cumberland) took effect as part of Act 137 of 2024. Delozier’s contribution to the law, which received unanimous support in the House, corrected a Department of Health (DOH) discrepancy to ensure veterans and their spouses receive the Vital Statistics fee waiver they are entitled to for death certificates.
Previously, veteran fee waivers were only available for military personnel in active service or honorable discharge. The eligibility for this waiver has been expanded to include general military discharge classifications. Act 137 of 2024 also applies when the applicant is the spouse or widow(er) of the service member or veteran. The fee waiver may be used for applications for oneself, spouse and dependent children.
“Pennsylvania ranks among the top five states with the highest population of veterans. Cumberland County alone is home to about 17,000 vets. It is critical they, as well as their families, receive the benefits they’re entitled to,” said Delozier. “I believe when military personnel serve, their families serve as well, and our veterans and their spouses deserve the benefit of having fees waived for official government documentation. I am proud of the work that went into ensuring this happens with this new act.
“I am grateful to my colleagues for their unanimous, bipartisan support of my contribution to this law, and our collaboration to support our Pennsylvania heroes who made the decision to serve. The changes put forward in Act 137 have taken effect to benefit vets across our Commonwealth,” concluded Delozier.
